Isa. 40:1-3 Comfort, oh, comfort My people, says your God. Speak unto the heart of Jerusalem, and cry out to her…The voice of one who cries in the wilderness: Make clear the way of Jehovah; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

사람은 기쁜 소식으로 전해지시는, 임하시는 그리스도가 필요하다. 임하시는 그리스도는 여호와 우리 하나님으로서(사 40:3) 그리고 영광의 여호와로서 (5절) 전해지시며, 모든 육체에게 계시되시고 보이실 것이다. 더 나아가, 임하시는 그리스도는 능력을 갖고 임하시어 그분의 팔로 다스리시고, 보상이 그분께 있고 보응이 그분의 앞에 있는 주 여호와로 전해지신다(사40:9-10). 마지막으로, 임하시는 그리스도는 그분의 양떼를 먹이시고, 어린양들을 그분의 팔 안에 모으시고 가슴에 품으시며, 새끼에게 젖 먹이는 이들을 인도하시는 목자로 전해지신다(사40:11). Man needs the coming Christ, who is to be announced as the glad tidings. The coming Christ is to be announced as Jehovah our God (Isa. 40:3) and as Jehovah of glory, to be revealed and seen by all flesh together (v. 5). Furthermore, the coming Christ is to be announced as the Lord Jehovah coming with might to rule with His arm, having His reward with Him and His recompense before Him (vv. 9-10).Finally,the coming Christ is to be announced as a Shepherd feeding His flock, gathering the lambs in His arms, carrying them in His bosom, and leading those who are nourishing the young (v. 11). 이사야서의 둘째부분(40장부터66장까지)은 그분의 사랑하는 백성인 이스라엘의 마음에 이르신 여호와의 다정한 말씀으로서 신언자의 이상을 밝히 보여주는데, 신언자의 이상은 여호와의 종이신 구속하시고 구원하시는 그리스도에 관한 것이며 또한 그분께서 이스라엘과 민족들에게 가져오신 모든 것을 포함한 구원과 더불어 새 하늘과 새 땅으로 완결되는 만물의 완전한 회복에 관한 것이다.

이사야서 40장은 이스라엘에게 하신 여호와의 위로의 말씀이다. 이 말씀은 사실 상 복음의 말씀이다. 1절과 2절은 “너희의 하나님이 이르시되 너희는 위로하라 내 백성을 위로하라 너희는 예루살렘의 마음에 이르도록 말하며 그것에게 외치라 … 그 죄악이 사함을 받았느니라 그의 모든 죄로 말미암아 여호와의 손에서 벌을 배나 받았느니라 할지니라 하시니라” 라고 말한다. 수세기 동안 이스라엘은 하나님의 징계 아래서 고난을 받아 왔지만, 이러한 위로의 말씀, 이러한 복음의 말씀이 이스라엘에게 전해질 때가 올 것이다.

신약은 하나님께서 육체 되신 분이신 예수님으로 사람에게 오셨다는 것을 보여 준다. …그분께서 오시기위해서는 육체되신 하나님을 그분의 백성에게 안내할 선주자가 필요했다. 이 선주자가 침례자 요한이었다. 신약은 요한이 육체되신 하나님을 안내하고 천거하고 소개하는 것으로 시작된다

요한의 소개는 이사야서 40장 3절과 4절에서 예언되었다. 여호와 구주이신 예수님은 광야에서 외치는 침례자 요한의 소리에 의해 안내되셨다. 이사야서 40장 3절에서 그 목소리는 “여호와의 길을 예비하라 사막에서 우리 하나님의 대로를 평탄하게 하라”라고 외친다. 여호와의 길을 예비하는 것은 예수님의 길을 예비하는 것이다. 예수님은 신약의 여호와이시다. 여호와와 예수님은 한 인격이시다. 구약에서 예수님의 이름은 여호와이며, 신약에서 여호와의 이름은 예수님이다.

우리는 우리의 하나님을 위한 대로를 만드는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 여호와의 길을 예비하는 것은 우리 마음을 예비하는 것이다. 예수님은 우리 영 안으로 들어오시려는 목적으로 오시지만, 우리 영 안으로 들어오시기 위해서는 반드시 우리 마음을 통과하셔야 한다. 우리 마음은 네 부분, 곧 생각과 감정과 의지와 양심으로 되어 있다. 사람의 마음은 골짜기와 산과 언덕으로, 굽은 곳과 거친 곳으로 가득하다.

우리가 구원받기 전에, …우리 마음에는 골짜기와 산과 굽은 곳과 거친 곳이 있었다. 심지어 지금도 우리 마음이 그다지 곧거나 평탄하지 않다고 고백해야 할 것이다. 우리 마음은 아직도 구부러져 있고 울퉁불퉁하다. 대로는 포장된 마음이다. 우리 마음의 각 부분과 길 모두가 회개를 통해 주님에 의해 곧게 되어야 하는데, 이것은 주님께서 우리 안에 들어오셔서 우리의 생명이 되시고 우리를 소유하시기 위한 것이다(눅1:17).

우리 생각은 굽은 곳으로 가득하며, 우리 감정은 매우 거칠지 모른다. 우리는 주님을 향하여 냉담할 수도 있다. 이 때문에 요한은 광야에서 외치며 사막에서 우리 하나님을 위하여 대로를 평탄하게 하려 했다. …우리의 마음은…골짜기나 산이나 굽은 곳이나 거친 곳이 없이 반드시 곧고 평탄해야 한다. 이것이 구주 예수님, 곧 여호와 하나님께서 계시되신 분이신 예수님을 안내하려는 침례자 요한의 외치는 말이다. (이사야서라이프스타디, 메시지21, 164쪽, 메시지44, 356-358쪽)

The last section of Isaiah (chs. 40.66) is the kind word of Jehovah spoken to the heart of Israel, His beloved people, which unveils the prophet’s vision concerning the redeeming and saving Christ as the Servant of Jehovah and the all-inclusive salvation brought in by Him to Israel and the nations, with the full restoration of all things, consummating in the new heaven and new earth.

Isaiah 40 is Jehovah’s word of comfort to Israel. This word is actually the word of the gospel. Verses 1 and 2 say, “Comfort, oh, comfort My people, / Says your God. / Speak unto the heart of Jerusalem,… / That the penalty for her iniquity has been accepted; / For she has received from the hand of Jehovah double / For all her sins.” For centuries Israel has been suffering under God’s chastisement, but the day will come when this word of comfort, this word of the gospel, will be spoken to Israel.

The New Testament shows that God came to man as Jesus, the incarnated One.…For His coming there was the need of a forerunner to usher in the incarnated God to His people. This orerunner was John the Baptist.The New Testament opens with John’s ushering, recommendation, and introduction of the incarnated God.

John’s introduction was prophesied by Isaiah in 40:3-4. Jehovah the Savior, Jesus, was ushered in by the voice of John the Baptist crying in the wilderness,…“Make clear / The way of Jehovah; / Make straight in the desert / A highway for our God” [v. 3]. To make clear the way of Jehovah is to make clear the way of Jesus. Jesus is the New Testament Jehovah. Jehovah and Jesus are one person. In the Old Testament, the name of Jesus is Jehovah, and in the New Testament the name of Jehovah is Jesus.

We need to consider what Isaiah means by making a highway for our God. To prepare the way of Jehovah is to prepare our heart. Jesus comes with the intention of getting into our spirit, but to enter into our spirit, He must pass through our heart. Our heart is composed of four parts.the mind, the emotion, the will, and the conscience.The human heart is full of valleys,mountains, hills, crooked places, and rough places.

Before we were saved,…in our heart there were valleys, mountains, crooked places, and rough places. Even now we have to confess that our heart is not that straight, not that level. Our heart is still crooked and rough. The highway is a paved heart. Every part and avenue of our heart need to be straightened by the Lord through repentance that the Lord may enter into us to be our life and take possession of us (Luke 1:17).

Our mind may be full of crooked places, and our emotion may be very rough. We may be cold toward the Lord. This is why John was crying in the wilderness to make straight in the desert a highway for our God.…[Our hearts must become] straight and paved, without valleys, mountains, crooked places, or rough places.…This is John the Baptist’s crying word to usher in the Savior, who is Jesus as the revealing of Jehovah God.
