행 9:3-4 … 갑자기 하늘에서 한 줄기의 빛이 그를 두루 비추므로, 그가 땅에 엎어졌다. 그러자 그에게 … 음성이 들렸다.

8-9 사울이 땅에서 일어나 눈은 떴지만 아무것도 볼 수 없어, 동행자들이 그의 손을 잡아 이끌어 다마스쿠스로 데리고 갔다. 그는 삼 일 동안 보지 못한 채로 먹지도 마시지도 않았다.

Acts 9:3-4 …Suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. And he fellon the ground and heard avoice…

8-9 And Saul rose from the ground; and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing. And they led him by the hand…And he was three days without seeing, and he neither ate nor drank.

바울이 다마스쿠스로 가고 있는 동안 하늘에 속한 이상이 그에게 임했다. 이 이상이 그를 바꾸어 놓았고, 변화시켰으며, 변혁시켰다(행 9:1-5). … 이 이상을 본 후 그는 눈이 멀고 매우 약하고 심지어 무능해졌다. 이 이상이 임하기 전에 바울은 분명했고, 시야가 맑았으며, 또 능력 있었고, 많은 일을 할 수 있었다. 그러나 갑자기 하늘에 속한 이상이 바울에게 임했고, 그는 변화되었다. 그는 눈멀어 아무것도 볼 수 없었으며, 무능하여 어떤 일도 할 수 없었다. 이상이 임하기 전에 그는 앞장서서 일했지만, 이상이 임한 후로는 자기를 인도해 줄 사람들을 필요로 했다.

그리스도인 생활에서 우리는 자신이 장님이며, 우리의 시력은 사라졌고, 갈 길을 모르며, 우리를 인도해 줄 사람들이 필요하다는 것을 깨닫는 때가 있어야 한다. 이런 식으로 눈멀게 되는 것은 축복이다. 오, 축복받은 눈멂이여! 그리스도인 생활에서 눈멀고 무능하게 된 때가 한 번도 없었다면 하나님을 위한 우리의 봉사는 구원받기 전의 바울의 봉사와 같을 것이다. 이런 식으로 섬기는 사람들은 모든 것이 분명하고, 자신이 올바른 것을 행하고 있으며 나아갈 길을 정확하게 알고 있다는 확신을 갖고 있을 것이다. 그러나 하늘에 속한 이상을 만난 사람들에게는 축복받은 눈멂이 임한다. 이 눈멂이 우리에게 임한다면 내적인 기름 바름과 내적인 빛 비춤과 내적인 깨달음이 있을 것이다. 내적인 이상은 점점 더 증가하여 우리가 주님을 섬기는 방식을 변혁시킬 것이다. 주님을 섬기는 것에 있어서 우리는 달라진 사람이 될 것이다. A heavenly vision came to [Paul on the way to Damascus]. This vision turned him, changed him, revolutionized him (Acts 9:1-5).…After he saw this vision, he became blind and very weak, even impotent. Before this vision came to him, Paul was clear, full of sight, and he was also potent, able to do many things. But suddenly a heavenly vision came to him, and Paul was changed. He became blind, unable to see anything, and impotent, un able to do anything. Before the vision came to him, he took the lead to do things, but after the vision came, he needed others to guide him.

There needs to be a time in our Christian life when we realize that we are blind, when we realize that our sight is gone and that we do not know the direction but need others to lead us. It is a blessing to be blind in this way. Oh, blessed blindness! If you have never had a time in your Christian life when you became blind and impotent, then your service to God will be like Paul’s service before he got saved. Those who serve in this way will be clear about everything and will have the full as surance that they are doing the right thing and that they know the right way to go on. But a blessed blindness comes upon those who are met by the heavenly vision. After this blindness comes upon us, there will be the inner anointing and the inner shining, the inner enlightening. The inner vision will increase more and more and will revolutionize the way we serve the Lord. In serving the Lord we will become a different person. (The Heavenly Vision, pp. 8-9)

사도행전 9장 9절은 사울이 “삼 일 동안 보지 못한 채로 먹지도 마시지도 않았다.”라고 말한다. 이 사흘 동안 그는 무엇을 했는가? … 11절에서 주님은 아나니아에게 이렇게 말씀하신다. “일어나 ‘곧은 길’이라는 거리로 가서, 유다의 집에 머물고 있는 사울이라는 다소 사람을 찾아라. 그가 지금 기도하고 있다.” 여기서 우리는 이 사흘 동안 사울이 기도하고 있었음을 볼 수 있다. 그는 어떤 것도 보지 못했고 식음을 전폐했다. 그가 할 수 있는 일은 다만 기도뿐이었다.

나는 사울이 기도하고 있었을 때 예수님께서 누구이신지 알기를 구하면서 그분을 분석하려고 애썼을 것이라고 믿는다.

사울이 기도하고 있었을 때, 그리스도와 교회에 관해서 이상과 계시가 거듭해서 그에게 임했을 것이다. 그 기간 동안 그의 체험은 주 예수님에 관한 많은 것들을 보여 주는 하늘에 속한 텔레비전을 보는 것과 같았을 것이다. 이러한 것들을 보는 동안 사울은 이렇게 말했는지도 모른다. “나사렛 사람 예수님은 여호와이시다. 그분은 나의 구주이시다. 그분을 따르는 이들이 그분께서 부활하셨음을 강하게 증언하는 것은 당연하다. 그분은 하늘로부터 내게 나타나셨으므로 부활하신 것이 틀림없다.” 사울은 계속해서 주님의 승천을 생각했을 것이다. 주님의 승천은 육체 되심과 인생과 죽음과 부활을 함축한다. 사울은 지금 하늘에 계신 주님께서 육체 되심과 인생, 죽음, 부활, 승천의 과정을 통과하셨음을 알게 되었을 것이다.

우리는 사울이 사흘 동안 식음을 전폐했다는 사실에 깊은 인상을 받아야 한다. 그가 했던 것은 단지 기도였다. 그가 기도하고 있는 동안에 그리스도에 관한 계시가 그의 존재 안으로 ‘텔레비전으로 방영’되었다. 사울은 이러한 하늘에 속한 텔레비전으로 주님에 대한 놀라운 광경을 보았다. 사울은 그리스도의 부활에 대해 더 이상 의심을 품지 않았다. 또한 그분의 육체 되심과 죽음도 믿게 되었다. 사울은 그 기간 동안 보았던 이상들을 통하여 복음에 대한 완전한 메시지를 받았다.

사도행전 9장 5절에 따르면, 사울이 “주님, 누구십니까?”라고 말하였고, 주님은 “나는 네가 박해하는 예수다.”라고 대답하셨다. 4절의 ‘나’와 5절의 ‘예수’라는 이름은 매우 큰 의미를 지니고 있다. 그 삼 일 동안 바울은 틀림없이 예수님과 이 단체적인 ‘나’에 대해 깊이 숙고하였을 것이다. (사도행전 라이프 스타디, 메시지 26, 212-214쪽)

Acts 9:9 says that Saul “was three days without seeing, and he neither ate nor drank.” What did he do during those three days? …In verse 11 [the Lord says to Ananias]: “Rise up and go to the lane called Straight, and seek in the house of Judas a man from Tarsus named Saul; for behold, he is praying.” Here we see that in those three days Saul was praying. He did not see anything, and he did not eat or drink anything. All he could do was pray.

I believe that as Saul prayed he tried to analyze Jesus, seeking to know who He is.

It is likely that as Saul was praying, vision after vision and revelation after revelation came to him concerning Christ and the church. His experience during those days may have been one of watching a heavenly television in which he saw many things concerning the Lord Jesus. As he saw these things, Saul may have said, “Jesus the Nazarene is Jehovah. He is my Savior. No wonder that His followers testified strongly that He was resurrected. He surely has been resurrected, for He appeared to me from the heavens.” Saul may have gone on to consider the Lord’s ascension, which implies His incarnation, human living, death, and resurrection. Saul may have come to realize that as the One who is now in the heavens, the Lord passed through the process of incarnation, human living, death, resurrection, and ascension.

We need to be impressed with the fact that for three days Saul did not eat or drink. All he did was pray. While he was praying, the revelation concerning Christ was “televised” into his being. Saul beheld a wonderful view of the Lord on this heavenly television. No longer did Saul have any doubt concerning Christ’s resurrection. He also came to believe in His incarnation and death. Through the visions that he saw during those days, Saul received the full message of the gospel.

According to 9:5, Saul said, “Who are You, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus, whom you persecute.” The “Me” in verse 4 and the name “Jesus” in verse 5 are of great significance, and [during those three days] Paul must have considered much concerning Jesus and this corporate “Me.” (Life-study of Acts, pp. 211-213)
