우리의 체험에 따르면 그리스도 자신께서 새롭게 되는 때이시다. 왜냐하면 그분께서 우리의 누림과 안식과 평강이시기 때문이다.

만일 우리가 그리스도를 누린다면, 우리는 새롭게 되는 때를 갖게 될 것이다. 우리는 단순히 주 예수님의 이름을 부름으로써…이것을 누릴 수 있다“. 오, 주 예수님!”이라고 부르라. 그러면 여러분은 새롭게 되는 때에 있게 될 것이다.

In our experience Christ Himself is the season of refreshing, for He is our enjoyment, rest, and peace.

If we enjoy Christ, we shall have a season of refreshing. We can enjoy [this]…simply by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus. Call “O Lord Jesus!” and you will be in a season of refreshing.

We need to enjoy seasons of refreshing in our married life.…Often a wife may be “bent double” [Luke 13:11] because she is bound by the anger she feels for her husband.…She can be released [from such bondage] simply by calling, “O Lord Jesus!”

Whenever we are bound, we need to call on the Lord. Then we shall be able to say, “Amen, Lord Jesus! I am now in a season of refreshing.” I encourage you to enjoy a season of refreshing by calling on the Lord’s name. (Life-study of Acts, pp. 109-110)

주님을 부르는 것은 성경적인 실행이다. 그것은 결코 우리가 만들어 낸 것이 아니다. …그것은 인류의 제 삼대인 에노스에서 부터 시작되어(창4:26) 다른 많은 이들에 의해 계속되었다(행2:21, 각주2 참조).

어떤 이들은 주님을 부르는 것이 에노스에서 부터 시작되었다는 말을 들을 때 에노스는 오늘날 우리가 부르는 식으로 부르지 않았다고 주장할 지도 모른다. 이것에 대해 나는 이렇게 답변하겠다.“ 그렇다면 에노스는 주님의 이름을 어떻게 불렀는가?”

가령 어떤 형제가 많은 문제를 안고 있다 하자. 그의 아내는 입원해 있고, 큰 아들은 직장을 잃었으며, 작은 아들은 학교에 잘 다니지 않는다고 하자. 이 형제는 이렇게 말하지 말아야 한다. “주여, 저는 매우 궁핍하므로 당신께서 제게 긍휼을 베푸시는 것이 필요합니다. 저의 아내는 입원 중이고, 큰 아들은 실직했고, 작은 아들은 학교에서 낙제했습니다. 주여, 제발 저를 도와주십시오.”이런 식으로 기도하는 대신 그 형제는 주님을 부르면서 이렇게 말해야 한다“. 주 예수님! 당신은 주님이십니다. 당신은 주권적이십니다. 주 예수님, 당신께서 저의 상황을 알고 계시니 당신께 감사드립니다. …오, 주 예수님!”이것은 강하고 기쁨으로 주님의 이름을 부르는 것이다. 틀림없이 이것이 구약과 신약 모두에서 성도들이 주님의 이름을 불렀던 방식이다.

사도행전 2장 21절에서 ‘부르다’에 해당하는 헬라어는…스데반이 했던 것처럼(행7:59-60) 들을 수 있게, 심지어 큰 소리로 부르는 것을 의미한다. 이것을 통해 우리는 주님의 이름을 부르는 것이 들을 수 있게 주님을 부르는 것임을 볼 수 있다. … 주님을 부르는 것은 구약과 신약의 계시에 충분한 근거를 두고 있다. 더욱이 우리는 주 예수님의 이름을 부를 때 새롭게 되는 때를 누린다는 것을 체험을 통해 알고 있다. 그분을 부를 때마다 우리는 새롭게 되는 때에 있게 된다. 이것은 말씀에 있는 사실이며 또한 우리의 체험에서도 사실이다. 나는 여러분에게 주님의 이름을 불러 보기를 격려한다. Some who have a great deal of theological knowledge may be unwilling to call on the name of the Lord. They may be afraid of “losing face.” But we may need to lose our face in order to gain the Lord Jesus. What an enjoyment it is to call on His name! Sometimes I am beside myself with joy in the Lord when I call on Him and enjoy seasons of refreshing. Day by day, and throughout the day, we can enjoy seasons of refreshing simply by calling on the Lord.

Calling on the Lord is a biblical practice; it certainly is not something invented by us.…It began with Enosh, the third generation of mankind (Gen. 4:26) and was continued by many others (see footnote 1 on Acts 2:21).

When some hear that calling on the Lord began with Enosh, they may claim that Enosh did not call the way we do today. To this I would reply, “How then did Enosh call on the name of the Lord?”

We cannot understand the way to call on the name of the Lord by reading only one verse. Rather, we need to consider this matter throughout the Scriptures. If we read the Old Testament from Genesis 4 to Isaiah 12, we shall find out the way to call on the Lord. Isaiah, in particular, indicates that we need to call on the Lord joyfully: “Therefore you will draw water with rejoicing / From the springs of salvation, / And you will say in that day, / Give thanks to Jehovah; call upon His name!…” (Isa. 12:3-4).We draw water out of the wells of salvation by joyfully calling on the name of the Lord.

Suppose a certain brother has a number of problems. His wife is in the hospital, his older son has lost his job, and his younger son is not doing well in school. This brother should not say,“Lord, I need You to have mercy on me because I am in great need. Lord, my wife is in the hospital, my elder son lost his job, and my younger son is failing in school. Lord, please help me.”Instead of praying in this way, the brother should call on the Lord and say, “Lord Jesus, You are the Lord! You are sovereign. Lord Jesus, I thank You that You know about my situation.…O Lord Jesus!” This is to call on the Lord strongly and joyfully. Surely this is the way the saints in both the Old Testament and in the New Testament called on the name of the Lord.

The Greek word for “call” in Acts 2:21…[denotes] to call out audibly, even loudly, as Stephen did (7:59-60). From this we see that to call on the name of the Lord is to call on Him audibly.… Calling on the Lord is fully grounded on the revelation in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. Furthermore, from experience we know that when we call on the name of the Lord Jesus, we enjoy a season of refreshing. Whenever we call on Him, we are in a season of refreshing. This is a fact in the Word and in our experience, and I encourage you to try it.
