행 1:8 … 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아에서, 그리고 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 될 것입니다.”

8:1 … 그날에 예루살렘에 있는 교회에 큰 박해가 일어났다. 그래서 사도들 외에는 모든 사람이 유대와 사마리아 전 지역으로 흩어졌다.

Acts 1:8 …You shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

8:1 …And there occurred in that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and all were scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

교회는 영원 과거에 하나님 속에 감추어져 있었을 뿐 아니라 또한 시간 안에서 계시되어 오순절날 산출되었고 이 땅에서 확산되었다. …교회는…이천 년 동안 끊임없이 온 땅으로 확산되었다.

하나님의 뜻은 우주 가운데서 교회를 갖는 것이다. 오직 한 지방에서만 교회를 갖는 것이 아니다. …비록 대표하는 의미에서 수많은 지방에서 교회가 출현되었지만, 교회는 우주적인 것이지 지방적인 것이 아니다. 그러므로 오순절날 교회가 비록 예루살렘에서 산출되었지만 그 교회의 본성은 결코 예루살렘 교회에 속한 것이 아니었다. …어느 한 지방에서 교회가 산출되는 것은 가능하지만 교회를 계속해서 그곳에 가둬 두고 오직 그곳에서만 자라게 하는 것은 불가능하다. 교회는 우주적이기 때문에 교회는 산출되는 과정을 가질 뿐 아니라 확장되는 과정도 갖는다. The church was not only hidden in God in eternity past; it was also revealed in time, produced at Pentecost, and spread on the earth.…The church…has been constantly spreading for the past two thousand years and has spread everywhere.

God’s intention is that there would be a church in the universe; He does not want the church to be in only one locality.…Even though the church has representative manifestations in many different localities, it is universal, not local. Thus, when the church was produced on the day of Pentecost, even though it was produced in Jerusalem, its nature was not merely that of the church in Jerusalem.… The church can be produced in one place, but it is impossible to continue the church in one place forever and force it to grow only there. Because the church is universal, it must not only be produced, but it must also spread. (The Three Aspects of the Church, Book 2: The Course of the Church, p. 25)

만약 한 지방 교회가 확장되지 않는다면 그 지방적인 교회의 본성은 하락할 수 있고 교회의 우주적이고 영원한 특성을 잃어버릴 수 있다. 원칙적으로 교회는 반드시 확장되어야 한다. 또한 신속하고 광범위하게 많이 확장될수록 더욱 좋다. 그러나 교회의 확장에 대해 말할 때 주의할 필요가 있다. 확장은 사람의 방법으로 격려해서 이루어지는 것이 아니고 사람의 손으로 이루어지는 것도 아니다. 교회의 확장은 주님의 생명이 성장함으로써 이루어지는 것이다. 사람 편에서 말한다면 교회는 신속하게 성장할 수 없고 빨리 자라도록 재촉할 수도 없다. 그러나 하나님 편에서 본다면 교회는 반드시 확장되어야 한다. 예루살렘 교회가 일어난 지 얼마 안 되어 하나님은 박해로 말미암아 그분의 자녀들을 각지로 흩어지게 하셨다.

교회의 확장은 수많은 장애를 돌파할 수 있고 수많은 폐단을 제거할 수 있다. 그러나 많은 지방에서 교회가 세워졌지만 그 마음이 오히려 좁아졌는데 예루살렘이 그 대표적인 예라고 말할 수 있다. 거기에 많은 구약의 유전과 교훈이 있었기 때문에 그들은 제자리걸음을 하고 외부와의 왕래를 끊게 되었다.

베드로는 첫 번째 사도로서 하나님의 비밀에 관한 이상을 보았을 뿐만 아니라 그리스도의 비밀에 관한 예언도 들었다. 비록 그가 계시를 먼저 얻었지만 교회를 거의 유대교의 영역 안으로 가져갔다. 베드로의 생각에 교회는 예루살렘에 속한 것이고 유대인의 것이기 때문에, 베드로는 교회를 이방 땅에 가져갈 수 없으며 이방인 가운데로 가져갈 수 없다고 생각했다. 그러나 교회는 반드시 확산되어야 했다. 교회가 확산되기 시작할 때 잘못된 관념들은, 그것이 지역에 관한 것이든 인종에 관한 것이든 서로의 차이점에 관한 것이든, 모두 분쇄된다. 교회가 확산되기 시작할 때 그러한 관념들이 부서져서 더 이상 존재하지 않게 된다.

우리는 사도행전에서부터 교회의 확장의 과정을 볼 수 있고 이것을 통해 이 땅에서의 교회의 발자취를 알 수 있다. …사도행전 8장은 제자들이 흩어져서 간 첫 번째 지방이 … 사마리아였다는 것을 우리에게 보여 준다(1-25절). 사마리아는 지리적으로 유대와 이방 땅 사이에 위치하고 있으며 그곳에 거주하고 있는 사마리아인들은 유대인과 이방인의 혼혈인이었다. 그들은 자신을 유대인이라고 여겼지만 유대인들은 여전히 그들을 싫어했고 그들을 유대인으로 여기지도 않았다. 사마리아 사람들이 구원받았다는 소식을 접한 예루살렘 성도들은 매우 놀라서 사도들을 보내어 그들을 방문하게 하였다. 사도들이 도착하여 그들을 위해 기도하자 성령은 즉시 그들 위에 강림하셨고, 하나님께서도 이 일을 확증하셨다(15-17절). 성령은 마치 베드로에게 “이것은 나로부터 나온 것이고 내가 한 것이므로 너희들은 오직 예루살렘에만 머물러 있지 말고 확산되어야 한다.”라고 말씀하시는 것 같았다. 하나님은 교회가 확산되어야 함을 증명하셨다. 교회 확산의 첫 번째 발걸음은…사마리아로 향했다. If a local church does not spread, the nature of that church is too low, and it will lose its universal and eternal character. In principle, the church must spread, and the faster, the farther, and the more it spreads, the better. But when we speak of the spread of the church, we must be careful. This spreading is not promoted by human methods, nor is it worked out by human hands. The spreading of the church is brought about by the growth in the Lord’s life. On man’s side, the church cannot grow quickly, and we should not be greedy for speed. However, on God’s side, the church must spread. Not long after the church in Jerusalem was raised up, God caused His children to be scattered to various places by persecution.

The spreading of the church can break through many barriers and eliminate many undesirable practices. In many places where the church is raised up, however, the saints may be narrowminded. This was the case in Jerusalem. They had many Old Testament traditions and teachings that caused them to close themselves off from others.

Peter was the top apostle who saw the vision of the mystery of God and heard the prophecies of the mystery of Christ. Despite the fact that he received the revelation, he almost brought the church into the limitations of Judaism. In Peter’s mind the church belonged to Jerusalem and to the Jews and should not go to the Gentile lands or to the Gentile people; however, the church had to spread. When the church begins to spread, erroneous concepts are shattered, regardless of whether the concepts are regional, racial, or mutually discriminatory. When the church begins to spread, concepts are smashed and cease to exist.

From Acts we see the process of the spreading of the church, and by this we know the church’s course on the earth.…Acts 8 shows that the first step in the disciples’ scattering…was…to Samaria (vv. 1-25). Samaria lies between Judea and the Gentile lands, and the Samaritans were a racial mixture of Jews and Gentiles. The Samaritans considered themselves to be Jews, but the Jews repeatedly rejected them and did not acknowledge them as Jews. After the Samaritans were saved, the saints in Jerusalem were very surprised and sent the apostles to visit them. When the apostles came and prayed for the Samaritans, the Holy Spirit immediately descended; thus,God Himself confirmed this spread (vv. 15-17). It was as if the Holy Spiritwas saying to Peter, “This is of Me; I did it. You should not stay only in Jerusalem; you must spread.” God confirmed that the church needed to spread; therefore, the first step in the church’s spread was to Samaria.
