행 16:6-9 성령께서 아시아에서 말씀 전하는 것을 막으셨으므로, 그들이 브루기아와 갈라디아 지역을 거쳐, 무시아에 이르러 비두니아 로 가고자 하였지만, 예수님의 영께서 허락하지 않으셨다. 그래서 무시아를 지나 드로아로 내려갔다. 밤에 바울에게 이상이 보였는데, 어떤 마케도니아 사람이 서서 “마케도니아로 건너와서 우리를 도와주십시오.”라고 하며 그에게 간청하였다.

Acts 16:6-9 …Having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, yet the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. And bypassing Mysia, they came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul during thenight: Acertain man, a Macedonian, was standing and entreating him and saying, Come over into Macedonia and help us.

사도행전 16장 6절부터 12절 까지는 바울조차도 그 안에 문제들을 갖고 있음을 보여준다. 성령은 그가 나아가 교회를 확장하기를 원하셨지만 그는 성령의 뜻을 몰랐다. 진퇴양난일 때, 밤중에 그는 유럽의 마케도니아로 가라는 꿈을 꾸었다(행16:9-10). 이것은 주님의 일을 하는 우리 모두가 항상 겪는 어려움을 보여준다. 일꾼들이 어떤 곳에 가서 일정 기간 동안 그곳에 정착하면 그들은 움직이기를 원하지 않는다. …옛 관계, 옛 애정, 옛 경향은 우리가 또 다른 곳으로 가지 못하도록 막는다. 그러한 것들은 우리를 움직일 수 없게 만든다. 이렇게 된다면 우리는 어떤 이상도 갖지 못하게 된다.

바울이 만약 성령께 정복되지 않았다면 교회는 유럽으로 확장될 수 없었을 것이다. …우리는 교회가 확장될 때마다 항상 만나게 되는 세 가지 어려움을 보게 된다. 첫째는 외면적인 것이고, 둘째는 동역자들 사이의 일이며, 셋째는 자아와 옛 사람의 느낌이다. 교회가 더 일찍 유럽으로 확장되어야 했으나 각종 어려움으로 인하여 시간이 늦춰지게 되었다. 교회가 확장 되는데 있어서 가장 마지막 어려움 혹은 관문은 바로 자아이다. 만약 여러분과 내가 계속 낡은 감정과 옛 관계 안에 머물러 있다면 교회의 확장은 우리에게 기대 하기 어려운 머나먼 이야기가 될 것이다. 그러므로 자아에서 해방되기 위해서는 참으로 이상이 필요하다. 이 세 가지 관문을 모두 돌파하면 교회는 확장 될 수 있으며, 이 원칙은 오늘날까지도 계속해서 동일하다. Acts 16:6-12 indicates that even Paul had problems within. The Holy Spirit wanted him to go out to spread the church, but he did not understand the leading of the Holy Spirit. As he vacillated between going forward or going back, a dream came to him in the night tellinghimto go to Macedonia in Europe (vv. 9-10). This illustrates a common problem among the Lord’s workers. Once workers come to a place for a time and settle down, they do not want to move.…Old relationships, old affections, and old inclinations keep us from going to another place; they make us unable to move. This is because we do not have any vision.

If Paul had not been subdued by the Holy Spirit, the church could not have spread to Europe.…The spread of the church often encounters these three problems. The first problem is outward, the second is between the workers, and the third comes from the self and old human feelings. The church should have spread to Europe much sooner, but these problems delayed its spread. The final problem in the spread of the church is the self. If we stay inour old feelings and relationships, the spread of the church will be delayed indefinitely. To break out of the self, we need a vision. When we break through, the church spreads. 바울의 낡은 관념은 그의 두 번째 사역여행 때 나타났을 뿐만 아니라 제 삼차 여행 때에는 더욱 분명히 나타났다. 바울이 고린도에서 로마 교회에게 편지를 쓸 때 그 안에는 로마에 가고 싶은 생각이 있었으며 스페인까지 갈 뜻이 있었다(롬 1:15, 15:23, 28). 사도행전에서 그는 동일한 느낌을 가졌다(행 19:21). 이것은 참으로 성령의 뜻이었고 교회의 확장과 깊은 관계가 있었다. 성령은 바울에게 교회의 확장을 위해 서쪽으로 가야 한다는 것을 계시하셨다.

바울은 제 삼차 여행에서 거의 대부분의 시간을 그가 이전에 머물렀던 소아시아의 여러 도시와 마케도니아 그리고 그리스 등에서 보냈다. 그는 이 도시들을 오가면서 후에 안디옥으로 돌아왔다. 그러므로 원칙적으로 말해 바울은 제 삼차 여행에서 교회의 확장을 위해 많은 일을 이루지 못했다. 사도는 세 번째 여행에서 돌아오면서, 마케도니아와 아가야를 거쳐 예루살렘으로 가기로 작정하였고, 거기에서 로마로 가려고 하였다. 우리는 이것이 성령의 뜻이었다는 것을 반드시 알아야 한다. 예루살렘에서 바울은 유대인들에게 붙잡혀 어려움에 봉착했다(행21:27-30).

로마서15장에서 바울은 로마와 스페인으로 가야한다는 것에 대해 매우 분명하였다. 또한 사도행전 19장에서도 바울은 로마로 가기를 원한다고 말했다. 그의 느낌은 교회의 확장과 매우 깊은 관련이 있었다. 왜냐하면 마케도니아와 그리스에도 달한 후에 유럽으로 확산하는 둘째 단계는 이탈리아로, 특별히 로마로 가는 것이었기 때문이다. 그러고 나서 다음 단계는 스페인으로 향하는 것이었다. 사도들이 스페인에 이르렀다면 그들은 아마도 그 곳을 땅 끝이라고 여겼을 것이다.

바울이 로마서를 썼을 때 그의 마음은 로마에 대한 관심으로 가득하였고, 성령은 그가 로마로 가기를 원하셨다. 그러나 바울 안에는 그를 잡아당기는 유대인과의 천연적인 관계가 있었다. … 그는 아직 유대교적인 관념을 완전히 벗어 버리지 못했다.

만약 바울이 당시 붙잡히지 않았다면 이방인 형제들은 제물을 드린 바울의 행위를 알고 난 뒤 크게 혼돈되었을 것이다. 도대체 무엇이 구약이고 무엇이 신약이며, 무엇이 율법이고 무엇이 은혜인가에 대해 분명하지 않게 되었을 것이다. 그러므로 바울이 예루살렘으로 돌아간 것은 분명 잘못한 것이었다. (교회의 세 방면 (2), 교회의 발자취, 67, 71-74쪽)

Paul’s old concepts were revealed not only in his second ministry journey but also in his third. When Paul was in Corinth during his third journey, he wrote a letter to the church in Rome and spoke of his feeling to go to Rome to visit the church there and from there to go to Spain (Rom. 1:15; 15:23-24, 28). This feeling is also mentioned in Acts 19:21. This was the will of the Holy Spirit related to the spread of the church. The Holy Spirit revealed to Paul that he should go west for the spread of the church.

On his third trip Paul went to many of the same places in Asia Minor, Macedonia, and Greece. He went back and forth to these few places and then returned to Antioch. Thus, in principle, Paul did not accomplish much for the spread of the church in his third journey. On his return from his third journey, he decided to pass through Macedonia and Achaia on his way to Jerusalem, and from there he would go to Rome. We must know that this was the will of the Holy Spirit. In Jerusalem he encountered some problems and was seized by the Jews (21:27-30).

In Romans 15 Paul was clear that he should go to Rome and Spain. In Acts 19 Paul said again that he wanted to go to Rome. His feeling was very much related to the spread of the church, because the next step in spreading to Europe?after reaching Macedonia and Greece?was to go to Italy, and specifically to Rome. Then the following step would be to Spain. If the apostle had arrived in Spain, he would have thought that he was at the uttermost part of the earth.

When Paul wrote the book of Romans, he was full of care for Rome, and the Holy Spirit wanted him to go. However, he was held back by the inward entanglement of his fleshly relationship to the Jews.…He had not entirely abandoned his Jewish concepts.

If Paul had not been seized at that time, his offering of sacrifices would have confused the Gentile brothers when they heard about it. The line between the Old and New Testament dispensations, between the law and grace, would have been blurred. Therefore, it was certainly wrong for Paul to go back there.
