Acts 2:38 …Repent and each one of you be baptized upon the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

5:31 This One God has exalted to His right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

[There are three sources of God’s requirements on man: righteousness, holiness, and glory. In fulfilling these requirements, Christ has accomplished God’s eternal redemption as the basis of our eternal salvation.] Salvation is different from redemption. Redemptionwas accomplished on the cross, while salvation is the application of the redemption of the cross to us. We receive redemption, and redemption becomes salvation to us. Therefore, redemption is objective and was accomplished on the cross, whereas salvation is subjective and is applicable to us. These are the things that we need to know. (Bearing Remaining Fruit, vol. 1, p. 148)

When some hear that Paul preached Christ and Christ alone, they may say, “Did Paul not begin his preaching with an account of the history in the Old Testament? Did he not speak of God’s bringing His people out of Egypt, and about Saul andDavid?”Yes, Paul spoke about those things, but he did so in order to prepare the way to preach Christ. In Acts 13:22 Paul quoted the word about David being a man according to God’s heart. Then in verse 23 he went on to say, “From this man’s seed, God, according to promise, brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus.” Here we see that after a short introduction, he came to his crucial message, which is altogether centered on Christ. After beginning with the history until the time of David, Paul went on to point out that from David’s seed God brought forth a Savior, Jesus Christ. With Him there is salvation. (Life-study of Acts, p. 317)

God exalted the man Jesus, who had been rejected and killed by the Jewish leaders, as the highest Leader, the Prince [Acts 5:31],the Ruler of the kings to rule over the world (Rev. 1:5; 19:16), and the Savior to save God’s chosen people. Leader is related to His authority, and Savior to His salvation. He rules sovereignly over the earth with His authority that the environment might be fit for God’s chosen people to receive His salvation (cf. Acts 17:26-27; John 17:2). (Acts 5:31, footnote 2)

To give repentance and forgiveness of sins to God’s chosen people requires Christ to be exalted as a ruling Leader and Savior. His sovereign ruling causes and leads God’s chosen people to repent, and His salvation, which is based on His redemption, affords them forgiveness of sins. (footnote 3)

Repentance is for forgiveness of sins(Mark1:4). On God’s side, forgiveness of sins is based on Christ’s redemption (Eph.1:7); on man’s side, forgiveness of sins is through man’s repentance. (footnote 4) As the Leader, the Ruler, [the Lord Jesus] is ruling the earth for the purpose of our salvation. He is ruling so that we may be saved. Let us take as an illustration the case of…immigrants to the United States.…The Lord Jesus exercises His authority to cause so many foreigners to come to this country. Then once they arrive, they become open to Him. This is an illustration of the Lord’s ruling the earth for the sake of saving people.

According to Acts 2:38,baptism upon thenameof Jesus Christ was for the forgiveness of sins.Forgiveness of sins is based upon the redemption of Christ accomplished through His death (10:43;Eph. 1:7; 1Cor. 15:3). It is the initial and basic blessing of God’s full salvation. Based upon it, the blessing of God’s full salvation goes forth and consummates in the receiving of the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 15:11 Peter goes on to say, “But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus we are saved in the same way also as they are.” This grace comprises the Lord’s person and His redemptive work (Rom. 3:24). Peter and the Jewish believers were saved by this grace, not by keeping the lawof Moses. As far as God’s salvation is concerned, to keep the law means nothing either to the Jews or the Gentiles.
