빌 3:8-9 그럴 뿐만 아니라 내가 모든 것을 또한 해로운 것으로 여기는 것은 … 내가 그리스도를 얻고, 그리스도 안에서 발견되려고 합니다. 내가 가진 의는 율법에서 나온 의가 아니라, 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암아 얻은 의, 곧 믿음에 근거하여 하나님에게서 나온 의입니다.

4:12-13 나는 비천한 상태에 있을 줄도 알고 풍부한 상태에 있을 줄도 알게 되었습니다. 배부르거나 배고프거나, 풍부하거나 궁핍하거나, 각각의 일과 모든 일에 있어서 나는 비결을 배웠습니다. 나에게 능력 주시는 분 안에서 나는 모든 것을 할 수 있습니다.

Phil. 3:8-9 But moreover I also count all things to be loss…that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness which is out of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ…

4:12-13 I know also how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to hunger, both to abound and to lack. I am able to do all things in Him who empowers me.

사도행전 27장과 28장에서 누가는 가이사랴를 떠나 로마로 향하는 바울의 항해에 관하여 길게 서술한다.···사도행전의 이 장들에 나타난 그림은 또한 바울의 생활과 행실과 성격을 보여 준다. 우리는 그 상황을 다루는 바울의 탁월함을 본다. 우리는 또한 그의 인간 생활의 지혜와 위엄을 본다. 의심할 바 없이 바울의 생활은 그리스도를 살고 그리스도를 확대하는 생활이었다.

이 부분을 주의 깊게 읽는다면 우리는 여기서 바울이 그가 빌립보서 3장에서 살기를 열망했던 바로 그 생활을 하고 있었음을 보게 된다. 빌립보서 3장에서 바울은 그리스도 안에서 발견되기 위하여 그리스도를 추구한다고 말한다(9,12절). 사도행전 27장과 28장을 읽을 때 나는 그리스도 안에 있는 바울을 발견한다. 험하고 힘든 항해를 하는 동안 바울은 내내 탁월하고 위엄 있는 생명과 지혜로 충만한 생명을 살았다. 비록 그가 죄수이긴 했지만 그는 마치 왕과 같이 행동했다. 더 나아가 그는 문제들을 다룰 때에 통찰력과 지혜가 있었다.···모든 환경 가운데서 바울은 탁월한 생명을 살았다. In chapters twenty-seven and twenty-eight of Acts, Luke gives us a long narration of Paul’s voyage from Caesarea to Rome.… The picture in these chapters of Acts also shows Paul’s life, behavior, and character. We see Paul’s ascendancy over the situation. We also see the wisdom and dignity of his human life. No doubt, Paul’s life was a life of living Christ and magnifying Him.

If we read this portion carefully, we shall see that here Paul was living the very life that he aspired to live in Philippians 3. In that chapter Paul says that he pursued Christ in order to be found in Him (vv. 9, 12). When I read Acts 27 and 28, I find Paul in Christ. Throughout a rough and difficult voyage, Paul lived a life of ascendancy and dignity and full of wisdom. Although he was a prisoner, he behaved like a king. Furthermore, he had foresight and wisdom to handle matters.…In every circumstance Paul lived a life of ascendancy. (Life-study of Acts, pp. 607-609)

비록 바울이 사슬에 묶인 죄수였지만 그의 행동은 위엄으로 가득했다. 이 땅에서 주님의 움직임에 대한 기록인 누가의 글이 강조하는 것은 교리가 아니라 주님의 증인들의 증거이다(1:8). 그러므로 누가의 글은 교리에 관하여 자세히 말하지 않고, 오히려 주님의 증인들의 삶의 증거들을 묘사하기 위해 그들에게 일어난 일들에 관하여 자세히 말한다. 특별히 바울의 항해에 대해 말하는 사도행전 마지막 두 장에서는 더욱 그러하다.

여기서 바울은 주님의 증인이었다. 그러므로 우리는 누가의 설명을 단순히 바다에서 일어난 폭풍에 대한 이야기로 읽어서는 안 된다. 오히려 우리는 이이야기에서 그리스도의 살아 있는 증인들 중의 한 사람의 생활이 어떻게 묘사되었는지를 보아야 한다.

사도행전 27장 23절과 24절에서 바울은 “내가 속해 있고 또 내가 섬기는 하나님, 그분의 천사가 바로 이 밤에 내 곁에 서서 말하였습니다. ‘바울이여, 두려워하지 마십시오. 그대가 반드시 가이사 앞에 서야 합니다. 보십시오, 하나님께서 그대와 함께 항해 하는 모든 사람을 그대에게 주셨습니다.’”라고 말하였다. 23절에서 바울은 먼저 그가 하나님께 속했으며 그런 다음 그분을 섬겼다고 말했다.

24절에서 천사는 바울에게 그가 가이사 앞에 설 것이라고 확신시켜 주었다. 이것은 23장 11절에 있는 주님의 약속과 19장 21절에 있는 사도의 갈망을 이루는 것이었다.

27장 24절에 의하면, 하나님은 바울과 함께 항해하는 모든 사람을 바울에게 주셨다. 이것은 하나님께서 그들을 바울에게 주셨고 그들이 모두 바울 아래에 있었음을 지적한다. 바울이 그들과 함께하지 않았다면 그들은 모두 목숨을 잃었을 것이다. 여기서 바울은 “나로 인하여 여러분의 목숨은 보존될 것입니다. 주님은 여러분 모두를 나에게 주셨습니다.”라고 말하고 있는 것 같다.

27장 35절은 “바울이 이 말을 한 후, 떡을 가져다가 모든 사람 앞에서 하나님께 감사를 드리고 떼어서 먹기 시작하니,”라고 말한다. 여기서 바울은 마치 왕처럼, 또는 적어도 대가족의 가장 처럼 행동했다. 그는 음식으로 인해 하나님께 감사를 드리고 먹기 시작했다. 폭풍은 여전히 사납게 몰아치고 배는 뒤흔들리고 있었으며 사람들은 목숨을 잃을까 두려워하고 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 바울은 그들에게 용기를 내고 평안 가운데 있으며 필요한 힘을 얻기 위해 음식을 먹을 것을 권했다. 그러고나서 그들 모두 앞에서 먼저 먹기 시작했다. 다른 모든 사람들은 두려운 나머지 먹고 싶은 마음이 없었다. 이 때문에 바울은 본보기로 “나는 용기를 내고 평안합니다. 나는 그리스도를 살고 있는 사람이므로 여러분이 나를 따를 것을 권합니다.”라고 말하는 것 같다. 바울이 솔선하여 용기를 내어 음식을 먹었기 때문에 “모두 용기를 얻어 음식을 먹었다.”(행 27:36). … 배에는 모두 이백칠십육 명이 있었다(행 27:38). 우리가 지적했듯이 사실상 그들은 모두 바울이 다스리는 왕국에 있는 백성들이었다. Although Paul was a prisoner in bonds, his behavior displayed much ascendancy with dignity. Luke’s narration, as an account of the Lord’s move on earth, does not stress doctrine but the testimony of the Lord’s witnesses (Acts 1:8). Hence, in his narration there are no details of doctrines but of the events that occurred to His witnesses, in order to portray their testimonies in their lives. It is especially so with Paul’s voyage in the last two chapters.

Here Paul was a witness of the Lord. Therefore, we should not read Luke’s account merely as a story of a storm at sea. Rather, we need to see in this story the description of the life of one of Christ’s living witnesses.

[In 27:23-24Paul says], “For this very night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood by me, saying, Do not fear, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And be hold, God has granted you all those who are sailing with you.” In verse 23Paul indicated first that he belonged to God and then that he served Him.

In verse 24 the angel assured Paul that he would stand before Caesar. This was to fulfill the Lord’s promise in 23:11 and the apostle’s desire in 19:21.

According to 27:24, God granted to Paul all those who were sailing with him. This indicates that God had given them to Paul and that they were all under him. Apart from Paul’s presence with them, they all would have lost their lives. Here Paul seems to be saying, “Because of me, your lives will be preserved. The Lord has given all of you to me.”

Verse 35 says, “And when he had said these things and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God before all; and he broke it and began to eat.” Here Paul conducted himself like a king, or at least like the head of a large family. He gave thanks for the food and went on to eat. The storm was still raging, the boat was shaking, and they were afraid of losing their lives. Nevertheless, Paul told them to cheer up, to be at peace, and to take some food in order to have the strength they needed. Then, in front of them all, he took the lead to eat. All the others were frightened and did not have the heart to eat. For this reason, Paul setup an example and seemed to be saying, “I am cheerful and at peace. I encourage you to follow me, for I am a man living Christ.” Because Paul took the lead to be cheerful and to eat, “all became cheerful, and they also took food” (v. 36). …There were in all “two hundred and seventy-six souls in the ship” [v. 37]. As we have indicated, they all were actually subjects in the kingdom ruled over by Paul. (Life-study of Acts, pp. 611-613)
