로마서 1장 9절에서 ‘섬기다’에 해당하는 헬라어는 ‘경배하여 섬기다’를 의미한다. 그것은 마태복음 4장 10절, 디모데후서 1장 3절, 빌립보서 3장 3절, 누가복음 2장 37절에서도 사용된다. 바울은 그의 복음 전파를 다만 하나의 일로 생각한 것이 아니라, 하나님께 경배하고 하나님을 섬기는 것으로 생각했다. (로마서 1장 9절, 각주 2)

The Greek word [for serve in Romans 1:9] means serve in worship; it is used in Matt. 4:10; 2 Tim. 1:3; Phil. 3:3; and Luke 2:37. Paul considered his preaching of the gospel a worship and service to God, not merely a work. (Rom. 1:9, footnote 1)

Romans 1:9 says,“God…whomI serve inmyspirit.”The spirit in this verse is not the Spirit of God but our regenerated human spirit.…This speaks of Paul’s way of service. The reality of Paul’s service was in the gospel as well as in his spirit. The way to serve God involves service in the gospel outwardly and service in the spirit inwardly. There must be the gospel outwardly and the spirit inwardly. The inward spirit must be strong, living, fresh, rich, uplifted,and released in the outward preaching of the gospel. The book of Romans can be divided into three sections. The first section covers the forgiveness of our sinsandour justification by God, reconciliation to God, and acceptance by God. As sinners we offended God,we were alienated from God,we were rebellious against God, and we were enemies of God. Since we received the Lord, we have been cleansed by His precious, redeeming blood, and we have been forgiven of our sins, justified by God, reconciled to God, and accepted by God. This is the first aspect of the gospel of God, which is spoken of in Romans 1:1 through 5:11.

The second aspect of the gospel of God involves life and sanctification. The second section of Romans shows that the Lord, who has accomplished redemption forus on the cross, also has entered into us to be our life.Romans8:10 says, “If Christ is in you,though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness.” Christ is in us. The first section of the gospel of God speaks of Christ dying on the cross; this is objective. The second section of the gospel speaks of this redeeming Christ entering into us so that we may live by Him, take Him as our life, and live in Him. As our life He becomes our everything. In this life there is power, light, wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, love, endurance, meekness, and joy;we can say that everything is in this life. When we live by this life, we enjoy all the riches in this life. In this way, we are victorious and sanctified. This sanctifying life is in us, continually doing a work of transformation. Eventually, we will be conformed to the image of the Son of God.…The second aspect of God’s salvation is spoken of in Romans 5:12 through 8:13.

The third section of the gospel of God speaks of those who have Christ as life,who have been transformed by Christ and have the image of Christ, and who have become the many sons of God who are being coordinated and joined together as members of Christ to be the Body of Christ (12:5). Christ is the Head, and we are the Body. Christ is our life, and we are His expression. This is the church; it is also the church life, which is referred to in Romans 12 through 16. Between chapters 8 and 12, there is a word of insertion concerning the grace of God’s selection in chapters 9 through 11, which is also included in the gospel of God. Before the foundation of the world, God selected us; in time, according to His selection, God gives us grace, calls us, and justifies us. Then He transforms us and causes us to be coordinated and built up together as one Body to express Christ. This is the complete gospel spoken of in the book of Romans.
